FAQs
What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a manual therapy technique applied to a joint (typically the spine) that is not working properly. This may add motion to the joint as well as stretch muscles and ligaments. There are many ways to adjust the spine… and this may also vary from chiropractor to chiropractor.

What is the cracking sound?

The sound often heard during an adjustment is called a cavitation. It is actually caused by the release of gas from the joint (similar to the gas released from a bottle of soft drink). The “pop” is not always associated with an adjustment, and bears no impact on whether the adjustment was successful or not.

Do the adjustments hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments are usually pain free, in fact many people find having a chiropractic adjustment relaxing. Your level of comfort depends on your injury, amount of inflammation present, presence of muscle tension and the condition of your spine and joints. Some people feel mild tenderness and tension after an adjustment, much like that felt after a strenuous workout at the gym.

Can I adjust myself?

In short… no. A chiropractic adjustment is a very specific force, delivered in a precise direction to a specific joint. Some people can turn and bend in certain ways to create a “cracking” sound, but this type of manipulation is may be counterproductive because it is straining an area that is already lax and/or hypermobile.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Chiropractic care has an excellent track record in terms of safety. In fact, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. Our chiropractors assess all our patients based on their health status and individual circumstances before deciding if chiropractic care is appropriate and safe for that individual.

Am I too old for chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is extremely versatile. As we get older, vitality, mobility and flexibility are important factors in our overall quality of life. In our practice, we have helped many older patients manage chronic ailments and arthritic symptoms while at the same time helping them maintain their independence.

Is chiropractic care appropriate for children?

Many problems we see in adults actually started during childhood. Bumps, knocks, falls, learning how to walk… even the birth process itself may affect the growth and development of the spine and nervous system. And, a lot of the time kids don’t complain of pain. Having your kids checked for spinal problems could be one of the best things you do for their future health and well-being.

What about during pregnancy?

Mums-to-be undergo a range of changes to their body during pregnancy, such as weight gain, postural changes and hormonal adaptations… all of which can put stress on the spine and nervous system. Chiropractic care during pregnancy may be very helpful in relieving pain, maintaining alignment and minimizing tension around the uterine and pelvic cavities.

How long will I need to go to the chiroprator?
